Alberta Cross : 'Taking Control'

Alberta Cross : 'Taking Control'

Released: 23rd November 2009

Label: Ark Recordings

Despite a fairly lifeless melody, “Taking Control” manages to recover to become a stripped down alternative indie tune of some merit. With some striking vocal work Alberta Cross have a unique selling point, and were it for slight refinement in the musical area it could be the complete product.

Whilst the main melody is technically sound, subtle guitaring and stripped down drumming leading the way, it's lack of penetration halts any lasting impression. Despite it's multi textural layering there is a distinct lack of interest, a missing hook that fails to grab. A slightly more robust chorus elevates proceedings somewhat, yet never to an expected level.

It is left to the vocals to save the day, and Petter Ericson Stakee duly obliges. With a voice full of intricate beauty and authority, he reaches soaring heights during the chorus as well as maintaining a steady level amidst the verses.

Yet it is hard not to think that, were it not for Stakee's intervention, the track would have petered out into insignificance. Despite his impressive vocal performance there is little else to pay attention to, something that is the difference in the track being great as opposed to just good.
