The glorious inclination towards traditional, folk infused music over the last few years has been a welcome and refreshing inclusion to many a music collection. The talent has proven vast, accolades have come from every direction and certain releases themselves make up some of the most interesting and commercially successful albums of recent years. Need we draw your attention to Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons and Noah & the Whale; a few of the main names that reference the popularity of this movement succinctly and effortlessly.
Andrew Davie, on the other hand is perhaps a name that does not immediately spring to mind when pondering all the folk influenced music in existence. His former band Cherbourg might though, after all they were tipped as one of the next success stories "to be" back in 2009 with their original sound generated by a common respect and willingness to absorb as many of each others different influences as possible. The success as Cherbourg however, was sadly short-lived after the band amicably decided to go separate ways and pursue alternative climbs. But actually the reality of this is rather more bittersweet since it allowed Andrew Davie to make the transition to solo artist. And what an inspiring solo artist he is.
His dedication to the art of songwriting is admirable at the very least as the resulting works unite heartbreak, love and life all swept up in a melancholic quality. Its raw yet soul lifting and leaves you under no illusion as to just how incredible this artist could be given the chance to write and evolve in whichever way he sees fit.
Vocally, his warm tones captivate in a moment as his endearing nature evokes all sentimentality ingrained even in the most cynical of people. It really is simplistic beauty in the truest musical sense and that will surely be the defining characteristic that will welcome Andrew Davie into the hearts and minds of all of us.
