Animal Collective : 'Summertime Clothes'

Released: 29th June 2009
Label: Domino
“Summertime Clothes” proves its self to be a rather bizarre if not entirely charmless track. Comprised of several intriguing elements that give it a buzzing, industrial feel the track possesses an electronically driven pulse that transcends genres. Unrelenting in it's pace but for a few breaks, it is somewhat hard to listen to initially. With such a pulsating basis individual elements appear swamped to begin with, only to subtly shine through eventually, including effective vocal echoes and various synthesised tweaks. It's electronic sound is contrasted by a fairly naturalistic vocal performance, albeit with the voice under subtle effect. Synths combine to comprise the ascending melody leading to the chorus, crafting a somewhat euphoric mood. However, whilst impressive on paper, the instrumentation in reality combine poorly and the brief lapses in it's incessant march are welcomed with open arms. When easing off on the electronic influences the track is very listenable, with the vocals more discernible and the melody far more accessible. Unfortunately these moments are few and far between.
The three remixes included offer some respite and a less incessant approach to what could have been a very good track, although ultimately the main feature leaves very little but a sense of confusion and a slight headache.
