Bodi Bill are definitely onto something, and their album title is the perfect expression of it. Mixing a vulnerable acoustic element with an assured electro presence, he has managed to create a fully functional yet completely contrasting album.
Seemingly all out acoustic with opener “Willem”, there is a seamless blend going on beneath the surface. Beginning with a twinkling piano and a strong vocal melody, electro drums intertwine with the delicate instrumentation to great effect. Staccato violins add yet more contrasting elements, yet they co-operate together very well.
Such is the variation on the album, closing track “Be Home Before Dinner” could be a stand alone electro number. With sprawling rhythms of a mechanical nature and manufactured melodies, it is hard to imagine the two tracks being on the same album. Looped vocals peep through the dense mass periodically, making for a surreal yet pleasurable experience.
As well as genres, there is also frequent fluctuations in tone. “Henry” proves to be a menacing number, electro drums and brooding piano duelling in an eerie atmosphere, whilst “Head In My Hands” features cheery vocals amidst the familiar genre swapping. Experimental yet assured at every turn, there is evidently a great deal of technical ability fuelling the innovation.
It is the stunning “Traffic Jam” that sees the amalgamation of these talents, blending them perfectly to become an easy stand out. Garish synths provide the opener to what turns into a heartfelt, melancholic symphony. Bristling with electro drums and quivering violins alike, the structure, composition and emotion make it a thing of real beauty.
It seems Bodi Bill has done the nigh-on impossible. Combining influences on an album is one thing, yet fusing them so effectively that each song is it's own entity is quite another. Eclectic yet collated, Two In One is a self explanatory triumph.
