Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...

David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Catherine Pockson : Forget Me Not

Catherine Pockson : Forget Me Not

Released: Out Now!!!

I don’t suppose too many people are overly familiar with the singularly delightful Catherine Pockson at this moment. Should justice be done, this will not be the case come the latter part of 2010 and this little gives us a taste of exactly why.

A solitary figure with a piano and a stunning voice, Catherine immediately evokes similarities with Regina Spektor or perhaps a less electronic Imogen Heap. Do not take this as base hyperbole for a new female solo act, this is more than merely the sum of its parts with lush piano providing a sumptuous backdrop for softly, almost whispered and breathy sung vocals that build and soar with a twinge of melancholy binding the music and vocals together.

“Up And Away” starts the record off and needs little more description than simply to say that it is a beautiful piece of music with haunting vocals, a stellar chorus and elements of heartbreak and joy intermingled in fascinating style. Second track, “Deepest Part Of Me” is infused with blues stylings and hints of jazz with Catherine’s deep piano lines. “Take Me As I Am” strikes as being a wistful ode to loves lost and those yet to come and leads gently into “Forget Me Not” which tracks along a similar vein, though ebbs and flows slightly more as it eases across its four and half minutes. “Soldier Boy” closes the EP out and is bound to be one of the most heartbreaking things I will hear all year long. Stunning.

Seemingly quite a low key release, this deserves to be a slow burning record that should serve as a springboard for Catherine Pockson to jump straight into all of our hearts. A wonderful, and emotional, debut; watch this girl fly.
