"Grunge is dead mate" a lot of my friends and acquaintances have informed me. True in some ways, as there aren't many bands of that genre at the forefront of music, not since the days of the early 90's has grunge dominated music. Despite this there are bands coming through who are heavily influenced by the grunge scene. This is one of them.
Dead Confederate, a five piece from Athens, Georgia, USA, have produced a single that is raw, direct and edgy. Lead singer Hardy Morris bellows out an aggresive vocal, slight churns of Cobain are evident here. It does get a bit repetitive, with the same tone and structure sustained throughout the track, until 3 minutes in when the bridge comes in. It is morbid and slightly bland but you do feel that the band have a quality that makes this tune somehow listenable on a frequent basis. It's a bit like Glasvegas or Inme, where the sound is fairly dark and squimp but the record is still pretty good. The guitars are heavy, accompanied with gospel-like keyboards during the verses. This gives out an almost atmospheric sound, with the drumming hit with much fierceness and emotion. It has the pace of your average Soundgarden track, nothing to vigorous but still quite compelling.
This single will not set the world alight but it still proves that grunge still has the potential to regurgatate itself into a relatively major force at somepoint in the future. It still has the potency and grab to make people turn heads and believe in something a little more off the cuff from the Lady Gaga’s/N Dubz of this world.
