Fanfarlo : Drowning Men/Sand and Ice (Double A Side)

Fanfarlo: Drowning Men/Sand and Ice (Double A Side)

'Drowning Men' : Fanfarlo, the Orchestral popsters, produce a very polished track here with a very neat and tidy, almost pop-like/traditional approach. With 'Drowning Men', the band from London have created a catchy song with their use of mandolin and the violin so its no surprise that they’ve been deemed good enough to tour with Snow Patrol this year.

The band’s very carefully arranged approach produces uplifting and quite infectious sounds. It is not a surprise that it may remind you of Arcade Fire, both in the sound and the way they use many instruments that are not so commonplace. Its fresh to hear a poppy like song but with the use of more instruments that make for a more expansive sound. The track must’ve sounded epic as they played SXSW in Texas.

'Sand and Ice' : 'Sand and Ice' doesn’t sound too dissimilar from its double a side compatriot.  Old like Swirly synths are the backbone to this track, with pure positive vibes from start to finish.  All the instruments intertwine quite magnificently and coalesce into a fun and friendly soundbite.

The band, who have echoes of Interpol in their sound, seemingly grab every moment of emotion into the vocal and the instrumental side of things.  The folky element gives the track a lot of substance and at the same time it keeps with the traditional flow of a mainstream pop song, whilst Swedish vocalist Simon Balthazar has terrific vocals that compliments the song perfectly.  It’s very clever stuff!

Anyone who yearns for a fresher outlook on pop, this band produce a fluctuating box of varied and upbeat sounds that can only make it comfortable listening and make you feel good.
