With high praise from Pheonix’ Thomas Mars, who has declared them his favourite new band, the adoration of recent Bond baddie Matthieu Almaric and a launch for their debut album at the Cannes Film Festival, it is fair to say the Fortune are already riding high in their native France.
Formed by members of the highly rated Abstrakt Keal Agram and Snookut to take their previously all electronic music into vocal and nu-pop directions and with Cassius’ Pierrick Devin at the production controls, the debut album from Fortune melds dance sensibilities to pop structures to devastating effect, displaying a host of dance based influences from disco to house to techno but with an overriding desire to create songs rather than tracks.
From the lugubrious bass and bleeps of forthcoming single ‘Under The Sun’, all Chic style groove and handclaps to the rock stomp of ‘Bully’, the downbeat synth pulses of ‘Tonight’ to the new wave choppy guitars of ‘Mission’, ‘Staring At The Ice Melt’ defies easy categorization aside from the simple but effective label of great pop music. On a recent UK tour with Does It Offend You Yeah, the trio of Lionel Pierres, Pierre Lucas and Herve Loos ably demonstrated that their initial impulse, to create a dance music that translated into the live arena, had been completely fulfilled with new fans created at every date. Further live dates to accompany the album will be announced soon.
‘Staring At The Ice Melt’ is released by Distiller Records on 30th August on cd and download.
