General Fiasco : 'Buildings'

Released: 22nd March 2010
Label: Infectious
Whilst Buildings proves to be a pleasant listen, it fails to inject much imagination into a decidedly straightforward, “indie by numbers” approach.
As debut albums go, it is one that General Fiasco can feel mainly satisfied with. Boasting plenty of sing-along moments, most notably in the form of “Talk To My Friends” and the chirpy “Please Take Your Time”, the instrumentation is impressively solid for a three piece. Owen Strathern's vocals anchor such anthems well, making for a fully functional ensemble.
The fact that it rarely rises above functional is where problems arise. Tracks like “Ever So Shy” seem badly contrived and lack inspiration, demonstrating a generic approach to song writing. Whilst others like “Rebel Get By” are a pleasant listen, it is difficult to ignore the linear structure thinly covered by faceless guitars.
This is a shame given General Fiasco's glimpses of genuine promise. A delicate approach and a thoughtful melody make title track “Buildings” a prime example, building slowly to a well constructed climax. Yet these flashes get lost amidst the filler, leaving the album well short of it's full potential.
There is no cause for panic though. Whilst Buildings may not be perfect it is a solid basis on which General Fiasco can work. With a more inventive approach and courage in their identity, they may well prove themselves band to watch out for.
