Japanese Voyeurs : 'That Love Sound/Blush'

Released: 8th February 2010
Label: Slimeball Records
The band’s debut E.P ‘Sicking and Creaming’ saw them make their mark on music scene with a release that sounded every bit as noughties as it did 90’s. Taking the core ingredients of Generation X grunge and adding there own mix of scuzzy bass lines and melodramatic lyrics, Japanese Voyeurs are the modern man’s Riot Grrll act.
Released as a double A side, 'That Love Sound’ is a song of juxtaposing styles, the verse is a halcyon landscape of bass chords and front woman Romily Alice’s mouse-like opening whimpers. The chorus is a dirty sleaze filled cacophony of heavy drum beats, grubby guitar riffs and sees Romily’s vocals transform from gentle daisy to attacking triffid; a change you will either love or absolutely despise..
'Blush', despite being far heavier than 'That Love Sound' feels like something of filler. Opening with feedback and distortion, before descending into an abyss of disjointed drumbeats and high-pitched screeching, the song is a complete paint by numbers of heavy grunge. With the only highlight being a short guitar solo at the songs outro, however it’s predictably distorted.
Japanese Voyeurs might be there own worst enemies, whilst they show they are capable of producing well written and performed pieces of grunge mayhem, Romily’s voice is so unique some may find it a bit like marmite; of course this isn’t the band’s fault and will no doubt attract more fans than they loose, but it may ultimately stop them from getting the mainstream success they deserve.
