David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...

Jet : 'She's A Genius'

Jet : 'She's A Genius'

Released: 24th August 2009

Label: Eleven Seven Music

It certainly has been a tough few years since Jet exploded onto the UK scene. With a raw attitude exhibited to the delightfully catchy tune of “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” it seemed that nothing could stop the Aussie rockers from dominating the charts for a while to come. But there was something apparently, and it has been a period of moderate success at best ever since. Until now. Returning to their gritty rock 'n roll roots Jet have rediscovered what they are good at, and then some. Maybe this will make her be their girl....

Beginning with a distinct bass and guitar sound, crisp instrumentation sets the tone from the off. Short and to the point, the curt verse riff gives way to flowing yet snarling chorus that is Jet at their best from start to finish. Simple yet undeniably effective, it's rapid cymbal beat and punchy chords provide enough attitude and verve to suffice. Add to that a well placed and well balanced guitar solo and you have all the elements of a classic rock 'n roll track executed expertly.

What is so pleasing is the fact that each element of the track is a return to form. Nic Cester's vocals possess every inch of gravel-like bite as ever before, whilst the guitars could have been recorded straight after their infamous single in 2003. It seems apparent that they have returned to their roots on all fronts, and what a decision that was.

It truly is a pleasure to hear Jet returning to form, as so many would agree. “She's A Genius” is a solid, well executed track that shows once again what Jet can do. Whilst it may not conquer the world, it is a solid marker that the band have laid down and will hopefully surpass very soon.
