Joker's Daughter : 'Lucid'

Joker's Daughter : 'Lucid'

Released: 7th September 2009

Label: Domino Records

Under the watchful eye of Gnarls Barkley man and all round infamous producer Danger Mouse, you can be forgiven for expecting rather a lot from Joker's Daughter. Fortunately the pair, completed by songstress Helena Costas, do not disappoint, delivering enchanting musical combinations from start to finish with new single “Lucid”.

You may also be forgiven for thinking that, with a background in Hip Hop and Electronica, Danger Mouse might be an odd collaborator given Costas' delicate voice and violin implementation. Once again the duo do not disappoint, weaving their talents together impressively to create stunning results.

Although seemingly a standard acoustic/orchestral affair, dig deeper and the presence of Mr Danger Mouse can be discovered. Whilst Costas' vocals shimmer with delicate beauty over a lightly strummed guitar and violin, subtle computerised pulses occasionally peek through the melody, adding texture without intruding in the slightest. Granted, on paper it sounds like an extremely strange combination, but it is something that must be heard to be believed.

Whilst the electronic aspect creates a point of interest, Costas is undoubtedly the star of the piece. Possessing a voice brimming with beauty, her recorded harmonies echo throughout the track in a stunning way. Combined with subtle strings it makes for folk pop of the highest standard, remaining relaxed and easy going yet with a definite purpose.

Although a seemingly cringe worthy blend of influences in theory, “Lucid” is a triumph in genre bending collaboration. By respecting and combining each other's elements, Danger Mouse and Costas have produced a track that intelligently transcends genres to create a stunning result.
