Kasms : 'Male Bonding'

A disjointed mess of a masterpiece. Brilliant. These words are all that are required to sum up what is Kasms two minutes and thirty seconds of energetic shrieking beauty.
The four-piece, who hail from London, are set to release their latest single, ‘Male Bonding’. A dark, catchy track, it contains driving, imposing drum beats and a stabbing guitar rhythm. Plodding along nicely in the background is a thumping bass line.
This brand of music, labelled “shriekbeat” by the band, strikes me as new wave-esque. The sound has the old, dark feeling of one that belongs in a dirty backstreet London club in the punk explosion of the late 1970’s, complete with the sweat and blood of Sid Vicious and the Bromley Contingent staining the walls. The banshee like wail of lead singer Rachel Mary Callaghan often descends into darker, lower tones reminiscent of Ipso Facto’s Rosalie Cunningham. A real alternative punk sound, Callaghan has been compared to Siouxsie Sioux.
The single, released on Trouble Records on 4th May, is backed by “K I D S”. A distinctly heavier, industrial track, Callaghan also wails the opening choir like exchanges. Her vocals then turn from drawn out shrieks into quick-paced chanting.
A new Queen Banshee has arrived, and together with her entourage she is looking to shriek her way to success.
