Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...
Introducing : Glass Animals : www.4ortherecord.com hit fever pitch this weekend when not 1 but 2 new tracks from the incredible Glass Animals graced our inbox with their presence...
David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Kate Nash: “DO WAH DOO”

Kate Nash: “DO WAH DOO”

Released: Out Now

Label: Polydor (UK)

Kate Nash seems to occupy the centre for female singer song writers in our current popular music sphere with Florence and Adele at the more compellingly virtuosic top end and Lily Allen appreciated by those who have the time and/or the tolerance. Amy Winehouse is too frustrating a topic and thus not worth getting into.

I for one am annoyed at the number of luminous felt tip pens purchased in order to draw ever thinner lines between Kate Nash and Lily Allen. To the untrained ear it might be hard to establish a difference. Fortunately there is one - Kate Nash is better. Her voice is a little sweeter. Plus, “Foundations” was fantastic and her debut 07 single “Caroline’s a Victim” made her immediately interesting.

“DO WAH DO” springs up like the careless voice of summer fun. Where her other tracks may deal with harsher social and realities, this is a kick back number. It’s short at two and one half minutes, sharp, and carries a filmic late sixties rock swing groove. I’m not sure whether the instrumental is necessary unless you desperately want to hear your own shower vocals against a backing of session musicians. It may end up on a film, definitely an advert. The track itself forms part of Nash’s 2010 album “My Best Friend Is You” set for release, well, now really, today. I like it, the single that is.
