King Creosote : 'Coast On By'

Despite being an artist renowned for ingenuity and charm, King Creosote's latest offering 'Coast On By' feels decidedly tacky. With an electronic opening and similar elements present throughout the course of the track, expectations are high for yet another quirky attempt. But with inexcusably bland lyrics and a melody of a fairly base level these do not last long. “I am lost and yet you all know where I am/Without the use of some magical map” simply doesn't grab attention and, combined with a mediocre chorus and a verses-by-number approach, falls fairly flat. The use of vocal harmonies add an extra dimension, but even they are often lightweight and disposable.
The track's melody, although rather basic and not terribly inventive, anchors things together and makes for a definite focal point. Initial use of drums and sustained chords appear rather lazy, yet with other instruments including a rather jaunty piano joining the fray the track ends in a rather rousing crescendo. It is an impressive way to close a track that, although technically sound in places and not without certain charm, is short on ideas.
