Kleerup : 'Longing for Lullabies'

Kleerup’s new single ‘Longing for Lullabies’, featuring Tityo, signals a forthcoming album release from the Swedish electro-pop producer, already famed for his collaboration with Robyn, ‘With Every Heartbeat’. An album which will, no doubt, float down to earth like a feather and land politely in your ear, and in the ears of absolutely everyone, whether they like or not, or even notice.
Actually, I’m not sure it is even possible to dislike it, as there is not much that can annoy you. Tityo’s vocal is executed flawlessly, as is Kleerup’s production. The sonorous vocal melody is the centre of attention, and we are given five near-identical repetitions of it. There is little distinction to be made between verse and chorus, save for a couple of extra notes. Indeed, the whole piece is remarkably economical, completely geared to smoothly framing the melody, using no more elements than necessary to hook you.
And none of this is really intended as criticism. Simplicity, even cleanliness, is a virtue and anyway, who wants to be confronted whilst they are microwaving their lasagne? This music is perfectly formed. It’s not art, it’s craftsmanship, like a well made chest of drawers. Yet it provokes some kind of love/ hate feeling in me, which is strange as it’s really not provocative music. I guess it’s just a bit bland, like it’s trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Still, I’d like to acknowledge its right to exist, and the fact that it does appeal: you’re going to hear this a lot on the radio, and if you’re like me, that’s OK as it’s quite easy to ignore.
