Lily Allen : '22'

Lily Allen : '22'

Released: Out Now!!!

Label: Polydor

Lily Allen was once regarded by many as a mouthy little posh girl who paid her way to the top by using her Dad as a stepping stone, releasing track after track of air-head pop that contributed very little to a credible music scene.  Fortunately for Miss Allen after two albums, she seems to have delivered a track that is not only very catchy but also lyrically strong and honest in its portrayal of 21st century female life.

Far mellower than some of her previous work (and all the better for it), the song tells the story of a women nearing her 30’s who has no real career and no partner.

‘22’ appears to be Lily Allen trying to show a more mature side, instead of writing how about how she’s not happy with a mans performance in the bedroom, shes tacking a more serious subject, her lyrics seem less rushed and more considered and almost insightful...almost.

“It’s sad but it’s true how society says her life is already over” is just one of many brutally honest lines that she comes out with, however to some the whole concept may seem a little predictable.

Lyrics aside, Allen is on excellent form vocally, delivering a suitably versatile performance as she coos her way through the songs soulful melody delivering a fantastically impassioned vocal.

However, having heard her sophomore album It’s not me, It’s you (the album this track is taken from) in it’s entirety, it has to be said that ‘22’ seems to be a momentary blip of genius, that isn’t fully realised on the album.
