Malachai : 'Ugly Side Of Love'

Released: Out Now!
Label: Domino
Suffering from a bad case of musical schizophrenia, there is little similarity between any two Malachai tracks. Yet this erratic nature produces results that make the Ugly Side Of Love very difficult to dislike. Barely half and hour in length it defies it's running time to show more joyfull character than humanly possible.
Despite such an offbeat disposition, rawness proves the uniting factor in the album. Sculpting rhythm and melody out of hollow drums and twanging guitars, the duo make each effort seem impulsive. “Only For You” is an extended drawl with fitful percussion assistance, seemingly made up on the spot and strangely appealing, whilst “Moonsurfin'” is a sixties tinged slice of impressive authenticity. Devoid of contrived emotion there is much to appreciate in this short, simple approach.
Even with such a changeable persona the songs prove memorable, a true testament to some clever writing. Opener “Warriors” is an obscure effort that packs much in to little space, whilst the eloquently titled “Shitkicker” brandishes melody and lyrics so captivating you will find yourself repeating it hours later. Not bad at all, but be prepared for some strange looks.
All of the above can be better represented in the opening minute of “Snowflake”. Stomping, considered and beautifully addictive, it's instrumentation and attitude serves as a microcosmic example for thirteen snippets of genius.
For boundless individuality, Ugly Side Of Love cannot be faulted. Unique to the utmost and bursting with character, Malachai have produced an album that can be saluted for it's premise alone, and even more so for ripping up the rule book and revelling in the results.
