Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...
Introducing : Glass Animals : www.4ortherecord.com hit fever pitch this weekend when not 1 but 2 new tracks from the incredible Glass Animals graced our inbox with their presence...
David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Manchester Orchestra : 'Shake it out'

Manchester Orchestra : 'Shake it out'

Released: 16th November 2009

Label: Columbia

It’s worth opening this review by noting two things, they are not a new band and are not from Manchester; actually they like so many other artists have been sitting in the background while other below par bands take to the spotlight for having a crazy look or a keyboard in their band.  'Shake it out', the third track from the Atlanta born quintet’s second studio album is a rabble rousing attack on the ears with distorted angular riffs, jangly percussion and a frantic drum beat, building to an intensely emotional blues-rock style chorus that acts as a rewarding pay off from the slightly agonisingly long build up.  The band’s astute combination of frantic verses contrasted against mellower choruses constantly keeps the listener interested as it’s near on impossible to tell what turn the tune will take next.

The band have been largely compared in the music press to Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro, a bizarre comparison when you consider the vocal abilities of Orchestra lead singer Andy Hull, a versatile performer who in the space of the track goes from indie front man to screamo king whilst managing to find time to croon in the songs calmer parts.

Shake it out has all the signs of making the band massive stars in the indie scene with an extremely likeable third single that is not only very catch but that oozes musical intelligence. Their first two tracks to hit British shores might have been below average but the band have finally cracked it.
