Marina and the Diamonds : 'Mowgli's Road'

Released: 16th November 2009

Label: 679 / Warner

By now everyone is more or less familiar with Marina and the Diamonds, and if you're not you really ought to be, and her second single “Mowgli's Road” is sure to do wonders for her ever increasing profile. Already a crowd favourite at her luminous live shows it sees the enigmatic Marina at her electrifying best.

With a voice bursting with rich tone and power the vocals are undoubtedly the focal point of the track once again. Scaling dizzy heights and plumbing resonate lows the true scale of Marina must be heard to be fully appreciated, with a jaunty melody to supplement it perfectly. Throw into the mix the odd animal call and you have a microcosmic performance that all but sums the eccentric songstress up.

Such a strong performance is accentuated further by solid yet understated instrumentation. A choppy keyboard provides a sturdy basis, whilst the verse allows the vocals to take charge with only a seductively mellow bass and synth for company. Despite appearing unassuming in theory, each element blends flawlessly to strike a balance and allow the track to be all it can.

There really is not enough that can be said for the virtues of Marina and the Diamonds, and lord knows more and more people will try in the coming months. With a wonderfully innovative and fresh sound the songstress is set for brighter things, with “Mowgli's Road” the perfect example of why.
