Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...

David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...

Middle Class Rut : 'All Walks Of Life'

Middle Class Rut : 'All Walks Of Life'

Released: 2nd November 2009

Label: Verve Records

Although not particularly revolutionary, “All Walks Of Life” provides a good example of what Middle Class Rut are all about. Filled with messy guitars and howling vocals, it makes up for a lack of ingenuity with sheer balls and attitude.

Despite only being a two piece, MC Rut certainly pack a musical punch. With a guitar that echoes throughout the recesses of the track and robust drumming to accompany it, there certainly is no question of the music falling short. Whilst somewhat simple in premise, the crunchy riff is undeniably catchy, providing a solid, recurring anchor for a decent rock effort. Throw in a reverb and distortion of epic proportions and you have a basis not to be ignored. True, it may not be much in the way of creativity, but with such power this simply doesn't matter.

The same ethos must be applied to Zach Lopez's vocals, it's gritty nature more than making up for a lack of finesse. More of a growl than a song, his efforts fit perfectly amongst the aggressive guitar and relentless drumming.

That is perhaps a good way to sum up Middle Class Rut as a whole; although unrefined on the surface, theirs is an approach built more on feeling than technicality, something that more than carries them through to make “All Walks Of Life” a success beyond question.
