Miike Snow : 'Miike Snow'

Miike Snow : 'Miike Snow'

Released: 26th October 2009

Label: Columbia

In an over saturated electro pop scene, Miike Snow look at things differently. Despite utilising technology for the development of their sound, it's understated and subtle use allows for a much more approachable feel to their music. With their self titled debut album they show how electronica and thoughtful song writing can live hand in hand, as well as the impressive results it can provide.

It is the lightheartedness of the album that is initially so striking. First track and debut single “Animal” dances along with a jaunty melody filled with glockenspiel tweaks and electronic undertones. The vocals come in tandem, fluctuating between husky to pure, striking a good balance. Similarly, the magnificent “Song For One” is decidedly positive, a simple yet chirpy riff opening for a swift drum beat and subtle bass to take over from. Vocally the balance is once again perfect, weaving an eerie mix between crisp and pure.

Yet the band are also more than capable of taking things slightly more seriously. “Silvia” takes a darker approach, with the absence of chirpy injections of synth being replaced by drones and whistles of atmospheric chords instead. “Faker” shows their versatility with a piano based melody, slowing the tempo right down to a fast walk. Despite some well placed pulses it is almost completely a ballad affair with only vocals for company. Given the easy going nature of other efforts it is a triumph, and proof that there are more than a few strings to this bands' bow.

It is this versatility that makes their pop infused electronica even more impressive given their obvious talents. Instead of taking the over populated, synth heavy route to pop music, they have used it's pretences and methods as a basis for a more mature, considered approach to tracks. New single “Black And Blue” features falsetto vocals alongside ascending synths and robust basslines yet, with a sturdy piano backing, never hints at becoming a through away pop track. A superb synth breakdown towards the end shows deeper credentials still, completing a well rounded effort perfectly. “A Horse Is Not A Home” follows suit in a similar fashion, blending pounding bass,

euphoric synth and formidable vocals to a perfect mix, resulting in a well balanced track. Likely to become a future pop favourite, “Sans Soleil” shines out as one of the most impressive tracks on the album. It's slower rhythm encouraging easy listening, mournful vocals and subdued melodies wisp over fragile synths to create the ensemble. Closing with a wonderful piano melody amidst electronic twists, it becomes almost the perfect marriage of electro and pop.

With such an eclectic mix of emotion and genre bending talent, Miike Snow the album is an undeniable success. And with such talents at their disposal, it is fair to say that Miike Snow the band will indeed find themselves on the end of justified praise after such a triumphant first attempt.
