Musee Mecanique : 'Sleeping In Our Clothes'
.jpg)
Released: Out Now
Label: Souterrain Transmissions
Considered and carefully orchestrated, “Sleeping In Our Clothes” possesses both composure and vulnerability in equal measure. A slow burner – perhaps too slow for some – it is an impressive offerring from the Oregon quintet.
Despite appearing a little pedestrian at first listen, there is plenty to discover with further forays. Built out of an organ melody with intricate accompaniment, it's sustained chords form a backdrop to an emotional tug of war. Trumpet, xylophone and acoustic guitar all play their part in the delicately balanced melody, the former rising out of the depths with great effect.
This melancholic ensemble is complimented by soft yet persistent vocals, shimmering with controlled beauty. Showing measures of vulnerability whilst remaining in control, they glide through the mix of instruments, adding an emotional dimension of their own. Rarely rising above a whisper, it is hard to tell whether they are intended to enchant or depress.
And that is the appealing quality of the entire track; the emotional direction is at the listeners discretion. Despite overflowing with melancholic angst and contrasting instrumentation, it does not instruct you how to feel. Instead it provides several impressive ideas and lets you figure it, perhaps it's most endearing feature of all.
