No and Maybes : 'Petra Petrified'

Released: 1st June 2009
Label: Unsigned
Summer is well and truly here, and it is at this time of the year people begin looking for the big summer hit. While it is unlikely this song will hit the mainstream masses, for all indie fans who fancy something a little different, this single from Danish band ‘No and the Maybes’ is the ideal summer sing-a-long.
The band sound like a confusing mish-mash of The Charlatans and The Beach boys via Phil Spector, with a hint of 80’s new wave. The song it's self a sheer delight to listen to, the lead vocals backed up perfectly with 60’s style vocal harmonies (think Beach Boys), a styling that automatically makes you think long hot summers and sangria on the beach.
The songs perfect combination of instrumentation is greatened further by the whimsical lyrics as they harmonise of a girl that dances around in her underwear near a window (may sound absurd but it works). Exactly what we expect from a band that take all the most cheesy and catchy bits of a Eurovision song and combine to make three minutes of Euro-indie heaven.
The band base their songs around a device they call ‘the sparrow’; they look for something in a song that makes it catch the listeners attention, be it harmonies, a hand clap rhythm or the use of unusual instrumentation. A method which means it would be difficult for the band to produce any songs that sound anything like any others.
No and the Maybes are very good at what they do, producing in-offensive easy-to-listen-to, electro pop treats that are fun, joyous and guaranteed to make you smile. If you want something that makes you sit and think, head somewhere else but if you want the ultimate summer sing-a-long look no further then ‘Petra-Petrfied’.
