Passion Pit : 'Little Secrets'

Passion Pit : 'Little Secrets'

Released: 16th November 2009

Label: Columbia

You've got to love Passion Pit. In a time of little joy and cynicism's their chirpy, positive electro shines through all that is negative to bathe everyone around them in sunshine. Sounding like a small, fluffy animal on hallucinogens their peculiar yet undeniably brilliant brand of synth-pop never fails to raise a smile, and “Little Secrets” is no different.

It is hard to put your finger on what aspect makes the band, and this track also,  so appealing. With an instantly glitsy eighties twinge the melody is an early candidate, fuzzing away through the scales without a care in the world. Falsetto vocals add a euphoric centrepiece to the already jubilant melody, with children's group vocals almost conjuring the image of a rainbow. Add to that xylophones and additional percussion, and you have a track that evokes the party spirit in a decidedly minimalist way.

Despite being joyful to the extreme, it is by no means a shallow experience. The melody remains catchy yet well conceived amongst an abundance of other elements, whilst the vocals provide penetration alongside their euphoric nature.

To tick both boxes is no mean feat, yet Passion Pit seem to do it for fun time after time. Regardless of their multi coloured exterior, underneath it lies sound musicianship that makes “Little Secrets” the undeniable joy that it is.
