Rogues : 'Widows'

Released: 23rd November 2009
Label: Friends Vs Records
As debut EPs go, you will struggle to find a more well rounded and accomplished one than Widows. Electro indie pedlars Rogues manage to strike the perfect balance between that danceable, fun feel and serious, considered music. The result is four tireless tracks that seem to get better after each listen.
Despite electronica having a fair influence over their sound, the band manage to personalise each track well. “MerryGoRound” begins with a likeable riff and a synthesised undertone, with polyphonic vocals adding a lighter, more personal touch. Close harmonies lend even more interest to vocals already filled with subtle talent, and a balanced electro chorus allows them the attention they deserve. Perhaps most pleasing is the continuous rhythm of the track, lending it's pace and continuity to conjure the image of the track's title into existence.
Such consideration also reflects in their versatility, particularly with “Violence” as they opt for a more synthesised approach. Despite a recurrent drum beat and a cascading melody it is by no means overdone, with more than enough room left once again for those understated yet commanding vocals to shine through.
However the undoubted stand out is the magnificent “Mechanical Heart”, marrying the two elements expertly into a track that will no doubt reach high acclaim. With a chorus that will remain in the memory long after the track's conclusion and addictive guitar riffs to match, it's subtle synth chords and delightful 80's nature complete what is a fantastic set of ideas.
Although only mere thirteen minutes long, Widows is undoubtedly one of the most promising and exciting EPs of the year. Rogues are definitely on to something, that much will be clear after the first time of listening. And the second, and the third, and the fourth....
