The Cribs : 'Cheat On Me'
Released: 31st August 2009
Label: Wichita Recordings
The Cribs, for what it’s worth, are a decent enough indie band however when they have such an influential musical legend like Johnny Marr on board you would expect far more. ‘Cheat on me’ is the first single from the band’s upcoming new album ‘Ignore the Ignorant’ and sees the band taking on a much fuller rockier sound then we have previously heard. However, the main problem with ‘Cheat on me’ is that it’s just incredibly middle of the road; it’s indie in its most uninspiring, predictable form.
Even with a much larger sound (thanks to production maestro Nick Launay) the only really interesting element of ‘Cheat On Me’ is Johnny Marr’s distinctive guitar riffs, that really just sound totally out of place; he is a talent far too big for this Wakefield band.
After a fairly sizeable break, The Cribs had the opportunity to survey the ever changing music scene and find a place where they can fit in, reinvent themselves and become the huge band they could easily have been. They have in fact returned sounding like nothing more then a Kings of Leon rip-off.
