Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...
Introducing : Glass Animals : www.4ortherecord.com hit fever pitch this weekend when not 1 but 2 new tracks from the incredible Glass Animals graced our inbox with their presence...
David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

The Drums : ‘Let’s Go Surfing’

The Drums : ‘Let’s Go Surfing’

Released: 28th September 2009

Label: Moshi Moshi

Aaaah, if only this song had come about at the start of summer! It would have been the perfect anthem for my sun-filled trips to Cornwall, creating the perfect mood for those sunny morning where one wakes up early, rushes in a quick breakfast and jumps in the car to the beach. A good few hours of waves, laughter and exhilaration later and we’re back home for a hefty feast of a lunch and an afternoon in the garden.

All whistled melodies, a simple yet poignant and catchy bassline underpinning hooky guitar and blissed out vocals.  The track rushes forward like a throwback to the days of Seventies surf rock were one to throw in a few more doses of melody and put a much more modern spin on things as opposed to the slightly more, er, “faithful” homage to The Horrors first record. I suppose one could argue this is what might have happened were The Beach Boys and The Gruesomes to have formed an allegiance. However, no matter, as it stands firmly in its own right as one of the finer indie singles I have heard this year.

I believe they have a few dates coming up in London (The Barfly springs to mind) so go see them live and drift away with thoughts of ocean spray, adrenaline rushes and afternoons in the sun.
