The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart : 'Higher Than The Stars' EP

Released: Out Now!!!
Label: Fortuna Pop
With a sound that would be more than comfortable in the midst of the 1980's and an easy going approach to song writing (and not to mention a ridiculously long name), “Higher Than The Stars” is a testament to simple, straight forward music and a clear statement of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart's talent.
Coveted by many yet mastered by few, the synth–based sound of the eighties often features in a lot of would–be musicians armoury. Yet it's simple, unassuming implementation makes it irresistible against TPOBPAH's unique sound. A delicate guitar melody subtly aided by an equally dainty synth allows “Falling Down” to blossom without technical repression, the subtle electronic tweets only enhancing it's dream – like quality. “Higher Than The Stars” also benefits from this treatment, it's chorus in particular coming into it's own thanks to a rushing synth and Kip Berman's distinguished vocal tone.
Despite a penchant for electronica TPOBPAH are by no means one trick ponies. “Twins” is a good, straight forward indie track that is held together by some harmonious vocals and sturdy guitars. Whilst not exactly thrilling, it's simplicity is it's charm as the melody moves slowly and Berman's voice floats at equal pace. Some suspect levels make the vocals work harder than they should, but they just about win the battle. “103” again shows a different musical side, with heavily distorted guitars and a vibrant melody whilst the vocals are once again the star of the show. Short and sweet, the track points out the virtues of simple, honest song writing, something the band evidently have great belief in.
For variety, simplicity and intelligence you really cannot go wrong with “Higher Than The Stars”. With a stripped down, basics first approach The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart craft tracks full of honesty and simple fun, something increasingly of a rarity in the midst of indie scene.
