Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...
Introducing : Glass Animals : www.4ortherecord.com hit fever pitch this weekend when not 1 but 2 new tracks from the incredible Glass Animals graced our inbox with their presence...
David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

The Rakes : ‘That’s The Reason’

The Rakes : ‘That’s The Reason’

Released: 1st June 2009

Label:V2

On the main stage at Leeds Festival this year, The Rakes are already off to a good start for the summer months.  The new single ‘That’s The Reason’ out on June 1st and taken from the new album Klang begins with a funky drumbeat similar to which Bloc Party’s drummer would favor.  After the addictive drumbeat has had time to firmly plant itself in your memory a simple but jolly bass line is no sooner ringing in your ears.  If this isn’t an almighty hook to get you moving, the vocals (resembling Tim Smith's of Editors) and bass line create a fantastic build up into the chorus, where the song explodes into anthemic pop song.

Despite all these factors making it an undoubtedly catchy and upbeat pop song, I can’t help thinking it’s nothing that hasn’t been done before, cue Pigeon Detectives and the one liners Scouting For Girls.  Nevertheless this doesn’t make them a no go.

For any of you festival goers this year, The Rakes are a must.  Beer in hand, pouring rain and copious amounts of mud…along with some damn addictive Indie tunes.  I think so.
