Tip Toe Records : Yonderboy 'Vast Ocean'/JHWB 'Brass Knuckles'

Released: 28th September 2009

Label: Tip Toe Records

Tip Toe Records are set to issue their third release in the form of a split seven-inch single. The record, containing tracks from Leeds bands Yonderboy and Just Handshakes (We’re British) is set to be released on the 28th September. Bursting to the seams with quintessential indie, the single looks like good value.

Yonderboy’s effort, entitled “Vast Ocean” sees a classic British sound reminiscent of the Smiths on show. Combined with melodic indie-pop, the crooning vocals are similar to that of Morrissey and feature heavily throughout the track, showcasing lead singer Zand’s vocal ability as he hits the high notes before effortlessly switching to deeper tones. You find yourself floating away over a combination of melodies that sound as if more than just two people are playing the guitar. The tempo of the track varies, continually driving the pace before dipping into slower, mellower rhythms. Although a good song, you can’t help but feel it may have just been a bit over-done. By this, I found myself losing interest, as it seemed to drag on for longer than it needed to.

The second track, “Brass Knuckles”, by Just Handshakes (We’re British) is catchy, with great lyrics. Imagine the Jam, mixed with Kate Nash. Add some Libertine melodies, an essence of early Arctic Monkeys riffs, and a tinge of British Indie. Now understand that this, essentially, is what “Brass Knuckles” is all about. Thoroughly entertaining with angelic vocals, the band is sure to be a hit.

The official launch night for the single will be at the Faversham in Leeds on the 26th September. On this evidence, get your train ticket, tell your parents you won’t be home for tea, and purchase that single.
