Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...
Introducing : Glass Animals : www.4ortherecord.com hit fever pitch this weekend when not 1 but 2 new tracks from the incredible Glass Animals graced our inbox with their presence...
David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Venetia and The Voltage: Dry Bar, Manchester: 02.05.09

venetia and the voltage

MOST bands would find it hard to make an impression in a completely empty venue as it can be a disconcerting site at the best of times – but not Venetia and The Voltage.

The Brighton-based band’s had the unenviable task of filling Manchester’s Dry bar on a Saturday night, at £5 quid a head, whilst still being pretty much unknown – but where the venue disappointed Venetia excelled.

For those that can imagine a new, electrified, Duke Spirit or perhaps (and I don’t like using this reference) Florence and the Machine – these kids are right up your alley.

The very contemporary perky beats run perfectly parallel to Venetia’s lingering distorted vocal and work to give The Voltage a bit of punch – they even have a Sonic Youth element circa Washing Machine at times.

Venetia revealed her third single release ‘Is This The Best’ on May 11 – you can check it out on her myspace, I was impressed by it and it was the reason for me agreeing to do this review.

The band is now turning their Altered Image-esq electrons and post-punk neutrons of their electric live show into new album ‘Keep Moving Or Something Will Get You’.

If you can go and watch this impressive figure strut her stuff do it. And if the rest of the songs have as much intensity and power as ‘Is This The Best’ the album could well make begin to make an appearance on everyone’s iTunes very soon.

Check out Venetia’s websites and see for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.
