David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...

Villa Nah : 'Running On/Ways To Be'

Villa Nah : 'Running On/Ways To Be'

Released: 10th May 2010

Label: Moshi Moshi

Minimalist, poised and slightly kitsch, “Ways To Be” is an infectious number from start to finish.

With very but synth and vocals, it is a testament that it's four minutes is so gripping. Choppy synthesised bass notes form the initial bedrock, occasional electro flashes adding colour to the persistent rhythms. Drawing influence from every corner of the eighties whilst remaining modern, it is a track that would look at home in either decade.

With vocals as basic as the melody, it is Juho's delivery that is key to it's success. Possibly a Gary Numan/Neil Tennant love child – there's a scary thought – he whispers and croons over the instrumentation with a distinctive tone and an assured attitude. Every bit as authentic as the music it's self, it completes a likeable ensemble.

“Running On” boasts much of the same in theory; balanced rhythms, light handed touches and whispered vocals. Yet a more modern feel and a wealth of influences makes for a refreshing, listenable track. With a distinctive chorus, there is more of an obvious hook. yet none of the careful craft is abandoned.

Villa Nah have done extremely well in many ways, not least fusing two decades together so seamlessly. With a light touch  and a creative mind, they make “Ways To Be” and indeed “Running On” two slices of electro joy.
