Wolfmother: 'New Moon Rising'

Released: 5th October 2009
Label: Modular
Following a lengthily spell away and almost a total reshaping of the line up, Aussie rockers Wolfmother return with their new single “New Moon Rising”. It seems as though the period of transition has done them good, retaining all the likeable features from previous efforts, yet with funky, fresh ideas added into the mix. Is a resurgence on the cards? I think so....
It is fair to say that, despite their popularity amongst some, Wolfmother have always had their critics, often being accused of producing straightforward, generic songs. And whilst this is undeniably true in some instances, it is also part of their charm. What you were always guaranteed with Wolfmother were good, old fashioned rock n roll tunes, and that is most certainly true of their latest effort. Based on a suitably grimy, crunchy guitar riff, the track takes a fairly standard format at a fairly standard length. But with such an irresistible melody and crashing drums to go with it, it is impossible not to feel drawn in.
With every good rock and roll band comes a stand out vocalist, and Andrew Stockdale can certainly classed as one of those. As well as handing guitar duties, Stockdale's refined caterwauling is perfectly in tone with the gritty musical tone of the track. Despite shadowing the main riff for parts of the track, a somewhat lazy touch, his range and power drive the track home and complete the ensemble perfectly.
Add to that a couple of solos and you have yourself a rock and roll track that, like them or not, cannot be argued with. Sure, they don't reinvent the wheel, but they do polish it up, dust if off and take it for a good old spin.
